IN line with the Queen's Golden Jubilee, the theme of Astwood Bank Carnival this year will be a Right Royal Romp. The main carnival day is on Saturday.

The day, which starts with a midday parade, will be lead through the streets of Astwood Bank by the Carnival Queen, Prince and Princess.

Prizes will be awarded for the best entrants in the procession itself and for decorations en-route.

When the parade arrives at the display field on Edgioake Lane, it will join a myriad of stalls and shows.

Entry and car parking is free.

The main features of this year's arena display are the Portsmouth Field Gun Display Team, Breaston Highlanders, Shirley Pipe Band, Redditch Westerners and the Pacesetters Dog Handling Display.

The field gun display includes a demonstration run and a fast-timed competition run.

This tough and thrilling show by the Volunteer Cadet Corps involves discipline and teamwork to manoeuvre the 7lb muzzle guns originally used in 19th century warfare.

The marquee and beer tent will again be filled with music.

As well as the now traditional brass band and morris men, there will be groups performing traditional Indian music and dance and also Irish music and dance.

The Break-a-Leg Theatre Company will also feature in the marquee performing their hugely popular sketches and songs.

Leading up to carnival day, the committee has lined up an array of fund-raising events.

Events which have already taken place include the quiz night, race night, the Right Royal Variety Performance by the Astwood Bank Operatic Society, fun run and the Teddy Bear's Picnic on the village park.

This year, the winners of Astwood Bank Carnival Sponsored Fun Run on Sunday received the Robin Bourne Trophy (senior and junior).

Still to come is a children's party at the Astwood Bank First School at 4.15pm on Friday.

This will be hosted by Andy's Magic, recently featured on Midlands Today.

Party lovers for this ticket-only event (cost £1) should call Tracy on 892925.

For the first time, the carnival committee is also organising a charity golf tournament to be held at Bidford Grange Golf Club on Saturday, May 25. Call David Smith on 893427 for details
