BARNT Green CC Firsts have booked their place in the third round of the National Club Championship after beating deadly rivals Wroxeter.

The visitors batted first and captain Brian Jones tucked into the inexperienced Barnt Green seam attack. But an impressive opening spell of 1-17 from nine overs by Haynes prevented the wheels falling off completely.

Barnt Green began to claw the game back with fine spells by Hudson (1- 39), Illingworth (1-29) and Jones (3-32) pegging Wroxeter to 208-6 from 45 overs with Brian Jones ending on 107 not out.

Despite losing Smith in the second over, Hall (38) and Dallaway (33) kick started the hosts' innings.

The game looked to be going to the wire and it came to the experienced pair of Gavin Haynes (72no) and Richard Illingworth (20no) to see Barnt Green home.

Worcester are the next opponents for Barnt Green in the competition on Sunday, May 26.

l Barnt Green Firsts lost their second Birmingham and District premier division game in succession against Coventry and North Warwickshire on Saturday.

Coventry batted first and were immediately put under pressure as Richard Illingworth took four wickets.

Warwickshire all-rounder Graeme Wagg played well to help Coventry post 161-9 from 55 overs.

Green were under pressure from the start of their innings with the dismissals of Chris Edwards and captain Lyndon Jones.

Richard Hall and Adam Smith looked to get Barnt Green back on track but the dismissal of Gavin Haynes, given out LBW, turned the game Coventry's way and Barnt Green eventually being dismissed for 124.

Jones said: "We are getting into positions to gain maximum points but we spoil our own good work by batting badly."
