SPA dignitaries joined residents for the opening of a scheme, offering independent living to people with learning difficulties.

Guests including Droitwich's Mayor, town councillor Maureen Lawley (Con - Droit Central) attended the opening of the eight flats at Kings Court, Worcester Road, last Friday.

The scheme has been developed by the town's Spa Housing Association in conjunction with Advance and Worcestershire social services.

In addition to the self-contained flats, the scheme provides a support worker who can give extra help to residents when required.

The development was called Kings Court after archaeological investigations on the site revealed the remains of a rider and horse's head figure from a roof finial, dating from the late 13th or early 14th century.

Festival Housing Group's managing director Guy Weston said: "This new development enables people with learning difficulties to live independently in their local community.

"As well as the one bedroom flats, the scheme has an office and sleepover accommodation for support workers."

Droitwich Spa Housing Association is now part of the Festival Housing Group following its merger with Partnership Housing in March.
