STARS look set to shine at a Spa school when it hosts its own Pop Idol-style contest.

Droitwich Spa High School, in Briar Mill, will stage the event over the last two weeks of term. More than 50 acts have already signed up.

Following the success of a variety show and a let's dance event, head of music Kevin Dowson and house co-ordinator Jan Arrowsmith decided to arrange the contest. And there are rumours that some of the male school teachers plan to give the youngsters a run for their money by forming their own 'boy band' especially for the event.

The contest, which is sponsored by the Yamaha Music School, will have prizes for solo, vocal group and rock band categories.

It is expected that the judging panel will be drawn from both inside and outside the school, with industry specialists being approached.

Kevin Dowson said: "There is such a wealth of talent in the school that we are always looking to provide as many platforms as possible for the students to display what they can do."
