THE complaint from M E Ford (You Say, May 3) about the condition of the Old Tollhouse was an unbelievable cheek. Whatever does it have to do with him?

If it's any of his business, the scaffolding has been there for so long because the contractor discovered structural problems requiring a specialist roofing firm. This, and the consequent trebling of costs took time to sort out.

Meryl and Derek Askew have had a tough time coping with all this, and must have found Mr Ford's smug criticism just what they needed.

Derek keeps his doors not on the pavement, as Mr Ford ignorantly asserts, but on his own land, with council approval. In Derek's words: "This is a working shop, if you want a museum there are plenty in town".

I have no love of the doors either but I am in favour of fair play. The Old Tollhouse supports a local family business, which may not be the prettiest in the neighbourhood but nor is it an imported, sanitised boutique.
