A NEW College contract to teach offenders woodworking skills has been renewed after most of those who took part in the scheme were awarded certificates.

The scheme runs at the Redi Centre and offenders who have been given community punishment orders can learn basic skills in woodworking, which includes the ability to produce items such as bird tables.

Groups of eight with minimum community punishment orders of 60 hours attend the Smallwood centre, where a NEW College tutor provides open college network (OCN) accreditation on behalf of West Mercia Probation Area.

Each OCN certificate takes 30 hours to achieve and 90 per cent of offenders from Redditch and Bromsgrove who joined the scheme have come out with a certificate.

The project has been running since 1999 and West Mercia Probation is set to renew the contract for a further 12 months.
