CAMPAIGNERS trying to save ophthalmology services at the Alexandra Hospital are still none the wiser about what will happen - despite talks with the chairman of Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, writes Julian Seva.

Redditch residents Jean and John Richards and Bromsgrove Councillor Joy Bushby, who is leading the campaign there, met Michael O'Riordan on Thursday to discuss the situation.

The threat is that eye services like cataract operations will be moved from Redditch and Bromsgrove to a centralised unit in either Kidderminster or Worcester.

But Mrs Richards said Mr O'Riordan gave them few reassurances apart from a pledge to publicly consult on any decision.

At the meeting, an 11,100-name petition calling for the retention of services in Redditch and Bromsgrove was handed to Mr O'Riordan.

Mr O'Riordan also indicated a £70,000 eyelaser bought through a public appeal would not stay at the Alexandra Hospital if the unit was moved elsewhere.

Meanwhile, the petition continues. Forms are in the Redditch Advertiser reception in Church Green East and the town hall.
