MORE than 600 children will converge on Stourport-on-Severn on Sunday for the third annual Worcestershire Youth Games.

Teams from each of the six districts in the county - Worcester, Wychavon, Malvern Hills, Wyre Forest, Bromsgrove and Redditch - will compete as teams in seven different sports for boys and girls aged from 11-14.

There will also be star guests and a host of entertainment, with organisers expecting over 2,000 people to turn up.

With Worcester and Wychavon having hosted the previous two competitions with great success, it's Wyre Forest's turn this year.

Stourport Sports Club in Kingsway is the location for six of the sports - athletics, tag rugby, girls' football, hockey, netball and basketball - while the tennis will be held at nearby Stourport Tennis Club in Tan Lane.

The event's theme will be based around the Commonwealth Games, to be held in Manchester in July, and each of the six districts will adopt a country for the day.

The Queen's golden jubilee will also be an underlying theme of the event, and a Queen lookalike will open the Games along with Stephanie Cook, who won the gold medal in the women's modern pentathlon at the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

Some of the entertainment during the day includes music by Robbie Williams, Madonna and S Club 7 (in the form of tribute acts), Lara Croft and Princess Warrior lookalikes, face painting and golf lessons from local professionals.

Wyre Forest District Council have been making plans for the event for several months and are confident it will be a big success.

Penny Hamilton-Gray, the council's Cultural Development Officer, said: "We are banking on at least 600 competitors and we are hoping there will be about 2,500 people there on the day.

"Hopefully it will be a great day, with a little bit of help from the weather."

The opening ceremony will be at 9.45am with competition due to get under way at 10.45am. Presentations of trophies will be made at the end of the day's events.
