DROITWICH Spa CC First XI kick-started their Worcestershire County League division one season on Saturday with their first victory of the campaign.

In their third match of the season, Spa defeated newly promoted Romsley and Hunnington at St Peter's Field by seven wickets in a much improved performance with 16 overs to spare.

It was Spa's first win of two in 24 hours as they saw off Pershore by four wickets in a frienly encounter on Sunday.

Winning the toss for the first time this season on Saturday, Spa skipper Ian Duggan chose to bowl and attack Romsley first.

After a poor start from openers Adrian Field and Gary Cartwright, Field came around the wicket and, in tandem with spinner Mike Gunston, pegged back the Romsley run rate.

Australian Andy Simmonds then took control and injected some urgency to the visitors' score with some lusty hits, top scoring with 66.

Left arm seam bowler Karl Goddard joined the Spa attack and continued his good form to take 3-25 from his nine overs.

Spinner Martin Woodward and Field then proceeded to mop up the remainder of the Romsley order.

Field took 4-36 from his 16 overs while Romsley finished on 175 all out.

In reply, a half fit Paul Bryan and Australian Brent Hawkins put on 40 for the first wicket before both departed in quick succession.

The in-form Nigel Haddock then took a liking to the Romsley bowling and hit several solid blows in partnership with wicket keeper and batsman Stuart Bryan.

They both looked comfortable and scored at a good pace to ensure Spa took home 20 valuable points.

Haddock top scored for the second week running with 59 and Bryan was second on 47.

l On Sunday, Bryan hit a match-winning 129 not out as Droitwich Spa Firsts continued their winning habit with a four-wicket friendly victory at home to Pershore.

Leon Botha struck a powerful 150 not out for the visitors before Bryan hit his 129 not out.

Pershore scored 257-4 from their 40 overs.

Spa started well with Bryan and Hawkins, who recorded his maiden half century for Droitwich.

The hosts rattled up 100 from 11 overs before several wickets fell.

But Bryan continued to attack and was supported well by Dave Watson (24).

Spa got home with nine balls to spare and four wickets left.
