A MAN who lost his council seat in the local election says he will be back.

Nazrul Islam, who represented the All Saints ward for four years, said he was confident he would be involved in politics in the future.

The 28-year-old father-of-one lost his seat by 230 votes in the Worcester City Council election on Thursday.

"I'm very disappointed," said Mr Islam, who lives in Chestnut Walk, in the Arboretum.

"It was an interesting time I had with the people of All Saints.

"But there is life after politics. I'll enjoy my free time with my family.

"I have a five-month-old boy, Umar, who I'll be spending more time with."

Mr Islam became the youngest member on Worcester City Council when he was elected in 1998.

He was also the youngest member of an ethnic minority on a council in England.

He works with Connexions and holds an honorary position with the Bangladeshi Government.

"I'll be back in politics, I'd like to represent people in future in a fair and democratic way," he said.

"I do have outside interests, I'm more interested in working with people who are deprived."

He said the smear campaign launched in the run-up to the elections had left a sour taste.

Disappointed

"I'm very disappointed with the smear campaign," said Mr Islam.

"If it was a fair and honest election, then there's no problem, but when there are lies going around, it's totally outrageous.

"I'd like to thank all my supporters, both my family and the people of All Saints."

Mr Islam said the smear campaign was now in the hands of the police.
