MALVERN College 1st XI defeated Clifton College at a canter on Saturday, by the surprisingly easy margin of nine wickets.

The match was delayed for an hour because the Clifton bus had broken down on the M5; clearly spending 90 minutes beside the kerb was not the best form of mental preparation because they were bowled out for the poor total of 61.

They lost a wicket in the first over (a smartly taken slip catch by Wood off the bowling of Vaughan) but they then proceeded without alarm to 40-1 before an astonishing collapse occurred. There were seven ducks in their total, extras top scored with 23.

Both Ben Edkins (4-9) and Charles Tolchard (4-8) returned prep school figures.

It took Malvern all of 17 overs to knock off the runs for the loss of only one wicket and Clifton had to do some hasty telephoning to procure the services of a replacement coach to take them back down the M5.

Clifton College 61 (C Tolchard 4-8, B Edkins 4-9).

Malvern College 62-1.
