DESPITE its morbid title, the next showing at Bromyard's Conquest Theatre is a play with humour, gossip and tenderness.

Showing from May 8 to 11, The Cemetery Club was written in 1987 by American playwright Ivan Menchell.

His script follows the lives of three New York widows who meet once a month for tea and gossip before going to visit their respective husband's graves.

All goes well until a Big Apple butcher called Sam meets the women in the cemetery and ends up changing their lives forever.

Director of the five-cast production, Eunice Bagshaw said: "The title, The Cemetery Club, is perhaps slightly off-putting but this is really a very, very funny and very witty play. It is one that you can laugh at, be tickled pink by or even be moved to tears by.

"It's a Golden Girls scenario with three ladies of a certain age (played by Frances Benson, Sue Imms and Jan Williams). We are blessed in the British theatre in general, to have these experienced actresses available."

"They are three very experienced people. In a small cast it is vital to have a good rapport, they have created that and had wonderful teamwork going almost immediately."

The Cemetery Club performances are at 8pm. Tickets £7/£6 from Conquest box office on 01885 488575.
