I WAS surprised to read Councillor Pam Davey's comments in the Evening News that the plans to re-develop the Lido in Droitwich Spa had ground to a halt as they did not have the backing of all the parties in the council.

The indicative scheme put forward was similar to that proposed by the previous Liberal Democrat/Labour joint administration and was supported by the current Liberal Democrat and Labour councillors.

It was our understanding that the scheme was also supported by the Conservative Group, but we are now told that the Droitwich Conservative members would not support a bigger facility or the council subsidising the project.

The Conservative administration's proposals to work in partnership with the development company Calypso did involve a contribution by Wychavon.

When the Lido was closed, amid strong protests last year, we were assured that it would soon be re-opened as an improved all-year round facility.

Unfortunately, it will remain closed for another summer and the many visitors that used to come to Droitwich Lido from all over the West Midlands will be as disappointed as the local youngsters.

COUN MARGARET ROWLEY,

Leader, Liberal Democrat Group,

Wychavon District Council.
