PLANS to turn an area of Leigh Sinton into a gipsy caravan site have been refused by Malvern Hills District Council.

A number of residents had opposed the plans, which related to land south west of Dragons Cross.

Around 90 representations were made prior to the meeting of the northern area planning sub-committee on Wednesday, expressing fears the site would be inappropriate, would damage the landscape and would present a road safety risk.

The Smith family already reside on the site but their retrospective application was turned down because of fears the already dangerous A4103 road would become even more of a hazard if a site entrance extended onto it.

Despite objections from residents, planning officers had no objections to the plans other than the road safety aspect.

Councillors voted to uphold the officers' refusal recommendation by a majority.
