WE were privileged at St Peter's Church on Saturday, April 27, to have Dr Roy Massey give an organ recital. Dr Massey has played in all the major recital series in this country and recently retired as organist and master of the choristers at Hereford Cathedral. He was nine times conductor-in-chief of the famous Three Choirs Festival where he premiered several important works for chorus and orchestra by modern English composers.

His performance on Saturday included Choral Song by Samuel Sebastian Wesley, works by Bach and Haydn and Music for the Royal Fireworks by Handel. In this area of the country no concert is complete without including music by Edward Elgar and Dr Massey played Nimrod from the Enigma Variations and the hauntingly beautiful Salut d'amour. The final piece was Postlude in D major by Henry Smart.

It was a wonderful recital and despite a slight problem with the organ when one note stuck, which fortunately Trevor Tipple was able to rectify, the evening was a resounding success and the profit of £460 will benefit St Peter's Church. Rev Chris Moss thanked Dr Massey on behalf of all those present and also Judy Hayward for her work in organising the event.

The next concert to be held will be on Friday, June 28 at 7.30pm with Elizabeth Bryan on cello and John Belcher as organist.
