HOMEOWNERS across the two counties are being warned to be wary of buying cheap meat products from door-to-door salesman.
Hereford police figures show joints of meat and sunglasses were shoplifters' top targets - and all of the thefts were committed by drug users feeding their habits.
Police said thieves would sell stolen items to unsuspecting households, relying on people knowing neither the seller standing at the door nor the quality of the goods on offer.
"It's illegal to purchase stolen goods and also potentially very dangerous," said Sgt Tim Powell, of Hereford police.
"Joints of meat need continual refrigeration and, even if they're in date, it's highly likely they've not been kept correctly and are therefore not fit for human consumption."
He also warned people to beware salesman selling cheap goods from street stalls.
Anyone suspicious about anyone at their door should contact police on 01432 276422.
