WORCESTER NORTON 0 MACCLESFIELD 0

(Worcester Norton won 4-3 on penalties)

A FINE save by Fiona Nash from Macclesfield's fifth penalty stroke sparked a rush of players and supporters on to the pitch to congratulate her as Worcester Norton under 15s reached the final of the English Hockey Association Cup to be held at the National Stadium, Milton Keynes on May 18.

Nash's Midland Premier League goalkeeping experience had been vital in this semi-final as she led her defence by example to deny the previously prolific Macclesfield team.

In front of her, central defenders Jackie Russell and Lucy Allen were outstanding in controlling the majority of the Macclesfield attacks.

In the central midfield area Charlene Mason and Anna Simmonds snuffed out the threat of the opposition's England under 16 international, Sarah Hopkin and managed to launch a number of dangerous attacks.

Up front, Jenny Rogers' skilful stickwork and powerful running created the majority of chances for the home team.

With the prize of a national final at stake both sides were cautious in the opening exchanges and defences were on top.

The teams were probably glad to reach half-time without having conceded a goal but after the break it was Worcester who created the most pressure as the visitors from Cheshire visibly tired.

The home team had many opportunities to make the match safe both in open play and at penalty corners but some sloppy concentration and poor decision making ensured there was no score at full time.

In the subsequent penalty shoot-out the confidence and technical skill of the Worcester side was crucial as they put away all four of the penalties needed and then Nash's save ensured Worcester's first national final.
