THE future of the Regal cinema in Evesham is still on hold after the sale failed to be completed on Tuesday.

The owner, John Angel, said if the deal falls through he will consider opening the cinema again on the first floor and possibly put a bingo hall on the ground floor.

The cinema was forced to close in February after Mr Angel received a warning from Wychavon that if he opened without a licence he could be prosecuted. He began carrying out expensive repair work to obtain the appropriate safety certificates, but stopped when the sale was imminent.

Regal cinema manager for nearly 40 years Irene McKenzie said: "It is a really worrying time at the moment. If we do open again we hope cinema goers will return to support the Regal." The prospective buyer, Alan Redpath, was not available for comment as the Journal went to press.
