TWO Evesham town councillors have pledged to continue to fight for a post office at the north end of High Street, despite being stamped on by Consignia.

Ever since the town's post office moved from its High Street site to within the Co-op Store in the Riverside Shopping Centre, couns Roma Kirke and Jo Sandalls have been battling to restore a service at that end of town.

They collected petitions containing around 500 names in support of their fight and had a face-to-face meeting with Keith Bridges, Consignia retail line manager in Birmingham who is responsible for Evesham.

Now, they have had a letter from Mr Bridges in which he says: "It is not our intention to open another post office in Evesham. It would not be viable as it would result in moving business away from the franchise post office.

"This would result in creating two unviable post offices with a possible decline in services because of the increased costs that would be generated."

Coun Mrs Sandalls said: "We don't intend to let it go away. We are not satisfied with the answers, many of which are ambiguous, and some of the explanations don't add up. Townspeople are still very fired up about it."

Coun Kirke added: "If Consignia doesn't pick up the business at this end of the town, then when the opportunity arises one of its competitors will do so - and we will encourage them.

"It is not just for the benefit of people at this end of town, but for people travelling into town as well and those who find it difficult to go right to the far end of the shopping centre."
