YOUNG people's dreams of a skate park in Stourport is on track as businesses and police back the scheme.

And British Waterways, the owners of the proposed site between Vale Road and the Staffordshire and Worcestershire canal, have said they are "willing in principle" to let the land for a nominal rent.

Last December about 600 children from the town's three middle schools and the high school answered a questionnaire on how often they went out and what facilities they would most like to see.

"What came over overwhelmingly was some sort of skate park," said PC John Harris, the town's beat manager.

"We don't want to raise any hopes but we're in negotiation to find out whether or not we could lease that piece of land or if British Waterways could give it to us."

Derek Fradgley, the chairman of the town centre forum, said he anticipated a lot of support.

"There is so much interest in the town in doing something for young people - and young people themselves would get involved.

"Businesses would give the materials and provide a bit of expertise. I'm all for it."
