JUDO: Paul Clarke put in a fantastic display to win gold for Samurai Judo Club at a senior limited grades competition.

Clarke weighed in at just 68kg for an U-81kg event but quickly settled to work with a superb maximum-point win.

He won two further contests, using a superb strangle technique on the ground in one, before receiving a bye in the quarter-finals.

Up against a massive Hereford opponent in the semi, Clarke triumphed with the throw of the competition, a technique he had practised the evening before, in just 18 seconds.

The Samurai man finished it off with a final win over a Leicestershire opponent and gained a bronze in a higher grades section.

Rowan Newbury, in the next weight category up, returned after a long lay-off to collect a bronze.

Samurai's up-and-coming girls impressed again in a limited grades competition with 10 medals.

Sisters Katie and Aimee Hodson both won golds, the former moved up a weight group for a greater challenge and racked up five maximum-point wins.

Lightweight Amy Oertel, new to England after moving from South Africa with brother Greg, looked nervous in her first competition for the club and lost her opening match.

But the experienced Oertel got into gear to take the silver in the end.

In the same category, Emily Watson made her full competition debut and did well for a bronze.

Amy Evans put in good efforts with some fine wins for bronze as did Abigail Muir who finished just short of a medal in fifth.

Emily Jones took a silver in the U-52kg middleweight section and her friend Emma Butler returned a bronze in the next weight up.

Lauren Underhill and Emma Burgess collected excellent bronzes in the open weight category but Joanne Butcher proved to be the star with a gold.
