GARDENING CLUB: Ann Wall welcomed John Sutton, writer and lecturer, to speak on Hardy Herbaceous Perennials of the Daisy Family. This is the largest family in the plant kingdom with some 2,500 species, the daisy flowerhead being a collection of separate florets either grouped centrally or around the flower edge.

Gay Rochfort won the competition for best flowering shrub.

MICKLETON SOCIETY: Following the AGM, when a new committee was elected for the next season, the evening's main event was an illustrated talk by Mr Colin Jacks on the GWR enterprise at Toddington. With a lifetime's working experience on the railways - and as an engine-driver - Mr Jacks knows his way around an engine-shed, and his enthusiasm has clearly not deserted him as he soon engaged members in his account of the redevelopment of the line to Winchcombe in the wake of the Beeching axings, and of the future plans for its extension to Cheltenham Racecourse.
