Swindon Supermarine 2, Evesham Utd 3

LEE Ross ended a barren spell in front of goal with a welcome winner at Swindon on Wednesday night.

The former Halesowen and Bloxwich striker had found the net just twice in six months but her certainly wasn't short on confidence as he blasted in an 81st minute spot-kick after a handling offence in the Supermarine penalty area.

Victory ended a sequence of nine matches without a win and lifted the Robins three places up the Dr Martens League Western Division table.

Unbelievably, they now have the chance to secure a top ten finish if they can take maximum points from their final game at Clevedon tomorrow.

The Somerset hosts have also struggled during the second half of the campaign having once looking like challenging promoted Chippenham and Halesowen at the summit.

Evesham welcomed back Phil Preedy and Shaun Pratt against a cock-a-hoop Swindon side that had staged a remarkable recovery to stave off relegation.

In fact, John Murphy's men had won five out of their last six games and must have been confident of adding three more points a the expense of Phil Mullen's men.

They made the perfect start when Steve Winchcombe prodded the ball past Darren Steadman for the opening goal after 14 minutes but Pratt scrambled in the equaliser nine minutes before the break following a Mark Wolsey corner.

Tate Hulbert was then allowed the freedom of the United half to take the ball around Steadman and make it 2-1 within two minutes of the restart but another Wolsey set-piece brought Evesham a second equaliser within 60 seconds.

Midfielder Steve Lutz was the player to find the net as a cracking volley flew into the net.

It was left to Ross to notch his first goal in United colours and, amazingly, move into the top 15 of goalscorers in the section - his 11 strikes for Bloxwich accounting for the majority.
