THE future of a Malvern play area still hangs in the balance following a consultation with local residents.

Nearly 200 people responded to a questionnaire circulated by Malvern Town Council, which is considering whether to close Avon Close play area due to anti-social behaviour and vandalism.

A majority of 41 people said they would not object to the play area being closed and relocated, but the council has yet to make a final decision.

"We've a lot of things to look at, such as whether we'd legally be able to close the area," said Councillor Mike Angell.

The area has numerous complaints over the past few years from neighbouring householders who say their lives are plagued by youths using the area as a meeting place in the evenings.

Balls are often kicked into gardens, fences damaged and youngsters shout abuse at residents, according to local people.

But parents with young children who use the play area say closing the site is not the answer.

"It's children from outside the area who are causing the trouble," said mum Karol Cary, whose children use the play area. "Where will our children play if it is closed? It's too dangerous for them to play in the streets and the younger ones can't go to Victoria Park on their own."

The town council is investigating the issues before discussing the matter again in July or August.
