PLANS to turn Droitwich's lido into a multi-million-pound health spa have run into trouble as the latest developments have angered some councillors.

For the first time in the authority's history, a full council meeting had to be suspended for a short break after councillors became angry after hearing the proposed plans had been changed and the lido would not be reopening this summer.

At a full meeting of Wychavon District Council, Councillor Margaret Rowley asked for an update on the plans of the company, Calypso, to build the heath spa in partnership with the council.

Chairing the meeting, Councillor Martin Jennings said Calypso was now proposing to either build a larger project or build a smaller facility if the council underwrites a substantial part of the costs.

"It became clear that Wychavon District Council would need to consider alternative options for the site," he said.

He said the council would now evaluate these proposals and if they are not viable it would invite other organisations to submit proposals.

"The existing lido will not be opening this summer, but action is in hand to ensure that the redevelopment of the site progresses with due diligence," said Coun Jennings.

Reacting to this news, Councillor Pam Davy said the project seemed to have ground to a halt now that the plans did not have the backing of all the parties in the council.

"If the Calypso deal had gone ahead we would have been delighted," she said.

However Coun Davy said Droitwich Conservative members would not support a bigger facility or the council subsidising the project.

"We know from past experience the people of Droitwich would not be happy if it expanded beyond the footprint."

Coun Davy said she wanted to see something done but was not prepared to rule anything in or anything out at the moment.
