A DROITWICH girl was flown to hospital by air ambulance after she was in collision with a car outside her school.

The ten-year-old youngster, who has not been named, was in collision with a blue Rover 416 on Ombersley Way outside Westacre Middle School.

The accident, which happened on Monday just before 8.15am, has sparked increased road safety fears. A youngster died just last week in Fernhill Heath following a similar incident.

The girl was flown to the Diana, Princess of Wales Children's Hospital, Birmingham, with head and facial injuries. At the time she was said to be unconscious but stable.

On Monday head teacher Roger Derwas said: "I made a call to the hospital earlier on today and they said she was conscious and talking, which is obviously brilliant news.

"The safety of children crossing this road is always a concern for us and we are constantly talking to the children about how to stay safe. It is something we have always looked to improve and will obviously continue to look to improve to keep our pupils safe while crossing this very busy road."

Worcester PC Paul Smith said: "This incident happened in the morning so we are sure a number of people would have been passing the area on their way to work and I would ask them to contact me. I would like to speak to anyone who witnessed this incident or saw anything which they think could be connected to it.
