CHILDREN from a Droitwich Spa school are enjoying the title of champions after winning a district First School seven-a-side football tournament.

Chawson First School's 'A' team fought off competition from their 'B' side and fellow Spa schools Westlands, St Joseph's and two teams from St Peter's en route to victory.

The Wyche Road school hosted the event on Thursday April 18.

There were two tournaments, each featuring a league of six teams - one for small schools and one for large schools, depending pupil numbers.

Tibberton First School won the small school event, which also included teams from Wychbold, Claines, Ombersley and Hindlip.

Chawson First School headteacher Gerry Hughes said: "It was good fun and good enjoyment - everyone tried and it was just the pure fun of football."

The day before, Chawson pupils were put through their paces by representatives from Kidderminster Harriers' community scheme.

Harriers staff visit the school each Wednesday for an hour to teach the children ball skills and give them the chance to play indoor and outdoor football.

The scheme, funded by the New Opportunities Fund, is part of sport in the community and involves all age groups at the school.
