JUDO: All 18 Samurai Judo Club players returned from the Midlands Minimon and Kyu Grade Championships with medals, including six golds.

Newcomer Archie Shrimpton, Chris Evans, Karl Gaughan, Benji Connor, Jordy Disspain and Paul Clarke all returned with top marks.

Gaughan started the gold rush, beating his toughest opponent in his first contest before taking first place with four maximum-point throws.

B Connor's devastating foot sweeps and throws made it four wins for gold, while Matthew Hibberd added bronze in the same section.

Rod Lane's Friday night older juniors beginners group is continuing to prosper with Shrimpton the latest off the conveyor belt.

He made light of his inexperience with a string of maximum-point throws for gold, including two contests of just 13 seconds in total.

Richard Baulk looked set to add another gold when a poor refereeing decision robbed him in the semi-final but he came back for a bronze.

Another of Lane's proteges, Joanne Butcher, made the final in style and did well against a more experienced player, claiming a silver.

In the lightweight boys, Wesley Connor won six contests to reach the U-27kgs final where a good opponent from the Home Counties ended his run.

Charles Woodward claimed bronze after three maximum-point wins in the next weight group.

Robin Woodward and Sam Stone reached the semi-finals in the U-30kgs which the former won.

But a careless error meant R Woodward could only take silver, while Stone hit back for bronze.

In the heavier groups, Joel Darch won five maximum-pointers in a row but suffered his only defeat in the final.

The girls' section started well with Disspain winning gold in the U-28 kgs and finishing fifth in the U-32kgs.

Amy Evans, in the U-36kgs, started with two fine wins and eventually finished with a bronze after losing her semi-final.

Aimee Hodson won her first three contests in 6, 34 and 53 seconds respectively only to lose her final against an experienced player.

Clarke was the pick of the Samurai men as he won a gold medal, while C Evans beat club-mate Neil Mullis to win the final of their group.

Matt Wakeman added a bronze in the heaviest weight group.
