THE parlour game of Ping Pong was continuing to become more popular in Bromsgrove as it was elsewhere across the country. Many hotels, restaurants and institutions were promoting the game. In Bromsgrove a successful two-day tournament for men and women was staged at All Saint's Schoolroom in Burcot Lane.

BROMSGROVE'S police chief for the past 23 years, 70-year-old Superintendent Jeffrey, had decided to retire. During his time in the force he had been in charge of four murders and had also worked in Droitwich Spa for a time. He would receive a pension of £155 a year.

A SCHEME to build a light railway from Bromsgrove's station at Aston Fields to the town and on to Lickey End, which had been enthusiastically received when it had first been proposed a few years ago, now seemed to be back on the agenda. There had been some strong opposition from people whose homes and businesses would, they feared, be seriously affected by the tracks and accompanying disruption.

SPEEDING motorists came in for severe criticism at the Easter Quarter Sessions held at the Shirehall in Worcester. A senior JP, Mr Amphlett from Wychbold Court, took the opportunity to condemn drivers who he said, he had seen travelling at speeds of 20 to 25 mph near his home over the holiday.

THOMAS King, from Purcell Green Farm near Bromgrove, was hauled before magistrates in Birmingham charged with watering his milk. He had a contract with a city dairy and the incident had come to light when samples were taken from churns being conveyed by rail. He told the bench a faulty tap near the milk cooler on his farm was to blame. He was fined a hefty £21/10/6. (£21.52.5p)
