Southam 8, Droitwich 25
DROITWICH travelled to already promoted Southam and came away with a fine win.
Late changes before kick-off saw Lee Mortlock start the game at scrum half for the missing Matt Blackmore.
The game began with Droitwich using the wind advantage to keep the home side back in their own 22, this led to an early penalty kicked by Simon Mountjoy. Southam then used their forwards to drive up the pitch to score an unconverted try.
Southam continued to use their forwards but solid defence by Droitwich prevented any further chances except for a penalty to lead 8 - 3.
The Droitwich pack then took the game back at Southam and the ball was fed out to Rob McClean who ran round the defence to score a try, and Ben Cotterell kicked the conversion.
The second half began with Johnny Andrews and Nick King defending solidly in the centres.
This led to the ball being passed down the line to Rob McClean to break from his own half and out pace his opposite wing,. He then passed the ball back inside to a supporting Nick King to beat the last man and score in the corner.
A further penalty by Cotterell extended the lead to 18 - 8.
With Droitwich down to 14 men after a player was sent to the sin bin, full-back Bruce Thomas joined the line and from his own half passed to McClean who then ran down the wing and round the opposition full-back to score under the posts. Cotterell added the extra points to lead 25 - 8.
Southam tried to come back but again the Droitwich pack held firm and were unlucky not to score again before the end.
Overall a more disciplined game which helped to contribute to an excellent team performance.
Droitwich 2nd XV 14, Chaddesley Corbett 1st XV 12.
Droitwich entertained Chaddesly and won a hard fought game somewhat narrowly.
Fielding a very young side it was the Spa side which made the early running with Jamie Faulkener making an electric break to set up Martin Smith to score.
Shortly after Faulkener went again from his own half to score himself.
Dean Evans excellently converted both tries.
In the second half Droitwich were against the wind, but defended very well to secure a hard earned victory against a first team.
