A SIX-YEAR-OLD boy spent a night in hospital after he ran into the road and was struck by a car.

The driver had been drinking and failed to stop at once, district judge Philip Browning was told in court at Kidderminster.

Geoffrey Gowen, 52, of Cheshire Avenue, Stourport, was bailed for a pre-sentence report and banned from driving until he appears again on April 26.

He admitted failing to stop and driving at 3.30pm with a breath alcohol reading of 55, against the legal limit of 35.

He had a previous drink-drive conviction in 1998, the court was told.

Gowen faced every driver's nightmare when the child ran into the road, giving him no chance to avoid the collision, said his solicitor, Fergus Maxwell.

He had drunk two pints of beer at lunchtime and then, because he was driving, had switched to a soft drink. He did not stop at once but quickly returned to the scene of the collision.
