WORKERS at a centre used by dozens of district children are reeling from a concerted vandalism attack and attempted break-in.

The management committee at Wyre Forest Play and Leisure Centre in Radford Avenue, Kidderminster, has warned the cost of using the centre may have to go up to pay for the damage.

About six "picturesque" windows were smashed and a two-inch wire mesh security screen at the rear damaged by raiders. They went on to destroy a trampoline sometime on Thursday night, causing damage estimated at a total of £700.

Management committee chairman and Wyre Forest district councillor Mike Shellie said the centre was used by about 100 children from a number of different groups including the Gingerbread Nursery and a new group set to be opened later this month.

He said a police grant had paid for side windows to be fitted with security grilles but the "rather nice cathedral-style windows" had been preserved.

"Then these idiots come along and start throwing stones at them," Mr Shellie added.

"If these things keep happening we will have to put the prices up which is to nobody's good."

The committee is now in discussions with Worcestershire County Council, which owns the building, over financing security grilles for the broken windows.
