TAXI licensing officers are encouraging residents to help ensure Redditch passengers are charged fair fares.

Officers will be checking drivers do not charge excessive rates with on-the-spot and mystery customer-style checks as part of the programme.

They are also reinforcing the message that drivers must always use their meters and must not charge more than the cost detailed on the meter.

A council spokesman said unfair fares were not a particular problem in the town and the programme was being undertaken to ensure the best possible taxi service was available to residents.

The programme follows roadside safety checks in January, which were a joint operation by Redditch Council, West Mercia Police and the Road Transport Enforcement Agency.
