IT is most unlikely the Government will ban the use of mobile phones while driving, despite evidence that they are dangerous.
I suggest vehicle insurance companies can, and should, tackle this problem.
All they need to do is to introduce a new clause into comprehensive policies to the effect that any driver found guilty of causing an accident or damage while driving and using a mobile would forfeit their comprehensive cover and would only be covered for third party claims.
I am sure this change would have a big impact on drivers, particularly those driving company cars, vans, lorries etc where employers would probably issue firm orders banning the use of mobiles while driving because of the extra financial risk.
The reduction in deaths and accidents could be dramatic.
Is there any insurer willing to give it a try?
