STEVEN Vile has left Sixways and retired from first-class rugby.

The New Zealand fly-half, who came to Worcester Rugby Club in November as back-up to Craig Chalmers and Tony Yapp, has decided to call it a day following a number of injury problems.

The 31-year-old made just five appearances for Worcester during his short stay and suffered from on-going hamstring problems at the turn of the year.

However, head coach John Brain said he had been pleased with Vile's contribution.

"He decided to retire from the game," said Brain. "Steven's wife has a good job in New Zealand and continuing to play in England wasn't a viable option for him.

"He's gone home and basically we've parted amicably and wished him all the best. Steven would have been a contender for next season but we understand his reasons."

Trialist Simon Lewis has also left Worcester. The winger, who scored six tries in five Warriors matches after arriving from Rugby League outfit Bradford Bulls, has not been able to win a contract at Sixways.

"We didn't really want to give him a contract," added Brain.
