A STATUE of the Queen Mother should be erected in Trafalgar Square in her honour, an MP said today.
Liberal Democrat home affairs spokesman Simon Hughes said there had long been a debate about what should be erected on the fourth plinth in the Square, and a statue of the Queen Mother would be the most fitting.
"It seems to me that a statue of the Queen Mother fits many of the criteria people have argued for," he told Radio 4's Today programme.
"They've said they didn't want another man, because all the other statues are men, and they didn't want someone in military uniform."
Mr Hughes and Lib Dem London spokesman Edward Davey were today tabling a Commons motion to propose a statue of the Queen Mother for Trafalgar Square.
