THE College of Heralds placed a coat of arms for Malvern Urban District on its rolls, "an undoubted asset to the district" according to the Malvern Gazette on January 18, 1952.

The project had started the previous year - the Festival of Britain year - and had created much debate.

"We may all, therefore, feel proud that at least we have our heraldic device in the great British tradition to hand on to further generations as something done in the 1951 Festival Year," said the paper.

The Cross of Westminster, representing Malvern Priory, held the chief place in the design, reflecting its position as the only cell of Westminster Abbey in early monastic times, the paper reported.

"It is truly a high honour to have been associated with our great national abbey," the report went on.
