MRFC Devils in thrilling encounter.

The newly named MRFC U10 squad, The Devils, hosted Old Salts in a thrilling game to start the second half of the season.

Old Salts came out running and soon opened the coring from a penetrating run. The Devils had to work hard, and they were soon rewarded with a score from Niall Johnson, breaking tackles to open the Devils account. Old Salts increased the pressure and were soon thought to be running away with the game, however when James Beattie ran round the Old Salts defence from a quick penalty, Malvern were on their way back into the game. Further tries from Will Watling and Niall Johnson brought the scores ever closer, and it was some excellent tacking from Man of the Match, Rory Galloway, that kept Malverns hopes alive. With the Old Salts 1 try ahead, The Devils fought vainly for the line, only to be thwarted by the referees whistle. Coach Phil Humphreys said "A fine performance from all the team which demonstrated their hard work from the first half of the season, and a sound base for the remainder of the season."

Malvern Eagles 7, Old Salts U9's 3

MRFC Eagles soar to victory.

The aptly named U9's side, the Eagles, soared to victory against Old Salts at Spring Lane last Sunday. The Eagles immediately put the opposition under pressure, and is was not long before Jon Webber went in for the fist of the Eagles tries. This was swiftly followed by a try from Man of the Match Dave Humphreys who picked up on a pass from a break down the wing by Will Watling. Old Salts came back with a try, but a further score from Dave Humphreys saw Malvern go into the second half 3 - 1 up. Early second half pressure was soaked up by Old Salts, but the Eagles were soon driving over for Dave Humphreys hat-trick. Excellent work by centres Joe Budd and Huw Neyroud, good cover tackling all round kept the Old Salts resurgence to a minimum with them running in 2 more tries to Malverns further scores from Dave Humphreys, and 2 from Will Watling to leave the Eagles winners by 7 - 3. Coach Ian Budd said "It was a delight to see the hard work paying off and for the team to achieve a well deserved victory, especially after some of the season earlier disappointments. Well done to all of the boys."

Both the Devils and the Eagles are at home to Hereford on Sunday 20th Jan 2002, meeting at Spring Lane at 10:00am.
