I was astonished by the illogical statement from Mike Davis (Malvern Gazette, January 4), manager of Worcestershire's Highway Partnership that lowering the speed limit may make the A4104 road more dangerous if drivers ignore the limit.

Surely what should be happening is that the Highways Department should be lowering speed limits where necessary to make our roads safer whilst working in partnership with the police, who should be enforcing the speed limits. It is unacceptable that speed limits should remain too high simply because the police won't enforce the limits.

It is only through enforcement of speed limits that we can end up with roads that are safer for everyone - motorists, pedestrians and cyclists. This is a result of us living in a country were it is now culturally acceptable to drive at excessive, dangerous speeds.

But if our speed limits are enforced and we start to perceive our roads as being safe, then more people will be encouraged to walk and cycle, leading to less traffic, more liveable towns and villages, less pollution and congestion.
