THE Severn Area Rescue Association's new radio link has passed its first serious test with flying colours.

The system, developed by Upton's Duncan Williams, links SARA members from Stourport to the Severn Estuary.

It was put through its paces last Saturday (Janaury 12), when the branch was asked to line the banks of the River Severn, between Clevlode and Upton, during a regatta involving 25 rowing clubs.

"It really put the system under great pressure and it went superbly well," said Mr Williams.

Up to now, SARA members have had to use mobile phones. The new system allows them to communicate via handsets and to keep in constant contact with air ambulance and mountain rescue services. Handsets are also being provided free of charge to the air ambulance service, as a fall-back should its present system fail.
