A Harley-Davidson specialist in Upton could be ordered to take down a large orange sign outside his premises.

The sign was condemned by town councillors on Tuesday, when they recommended refusal of a retrospective planning application.

It will be up to district councillors to decide whether the sign can stay.

The sign for Rev's Hog Motorcycles, on Old Bridge Road, East Waterside, just off the A4104, was erected by owner Paul "Rev" Mitchell.

"It's large, obtrusive, and out of place," said Coun Simon Wilkinson.

Upton's mayor Roger Barker agreed, saying visitors driving into Upton could be forgiven for thinking the town's name was Rev's Hog Motorcycles.

Concerns were also raised about the precedent granting permission for the sign would set.

However, Mr Mitchell defended the sign, explaining its distinctive orange and black colour was that of racing Harley-Davidsons. He said the sign, which went up after last year's floods had receded, had dramatically improved trade. He also denied that it was obtrusive.

"In summer, you have signs going all the way down that road advertising the marina, the cafe and various other things," he said. He vowed to appeal if permission for the sign is refused.
