Redditch Exiles 20 Kenilworth Veterans 14
Redditch got a nasty shock when Kenilworth broke through with their first meaningful attack for a converted.
The response was immediate, driving play put the Exiles to within touching distance of the line, which was eventually breached by Mark Cardy taking three defenders over with him.
In a similar position minutes later the hosts chose to pass
wide allowing Dave Smith to round off the move for the second with neither converted.
Redditch had the edge in scrum and line out, with the visitors unable to throw straight, and were optimistic of taking
control in the second half with the elements in their
favour.
Veterans were determined to
hold firm against waves of attacks, leaving the Men in Pink to rely on the boot of Trevor Pennington for a penalty.
After soaking up the home pressure Kenilworth turned the tables when a defensive break out, resulting in a long run uphill and another converted
try.
Both teams got frustrated with an inability to convert possession and the
enthusiasm spilled over into tussles between many of
the forwards.
Captain and Man of the Match Andy Carr encouraged his
troops to keep it simple and cut out mistakes.
Mark Cardy saved the day with another of his bulldozing runs from a tap penalty, converted by Pennington.
The hosts held on comfortably for the remaining minutes but will need to convert more opportunities at Droitwich on Saturday.
