KEVIN Smith and Eric Mayers grabbed the first New Year golfing honours when they returned scores of 64 and 66 to win their respective sections in the Belmont Golf Club's January medal.
Smith, playing off a 10 handicap shot a gross 74 to pip Phil Skyrme for a fine victory by three shots.
It was a closer contest in division two when Mayers, a 14 handciapper shot a round of 80, equal with John Lewthwaite but he emerged triumphant due to a better backnine on countback.
Results division one (0-12): 1 Kevin Smith 74-10-64, 2 Phil Skyrme 79-12-67, 3 Steve Hughes 74-6-68, 4 Tristan Dodd 73-5-68.
Division two (13-28): 1 Eric Mayers 80-14-66, 2 John Lewthwaite 80-14-66, 3 Jeff Treadwell 86-16-70, 4 Ken Jury 85-15-70.
