IT seems fitting that the Backbeat Beatles are a tribute band to the Fab Four, because since George Harrison's death the word tribute emphasises the notion of memory rather than admiration.

Of course, with a tribute band the idea has always been of appreciation, recognition and memory, but since George's death the word has perhaps taken on more melancholy overtones.

The band was formed in 1994, its members are all from the Liverpool area, and they are arguably one of the truest counterfeits of The Beatles.

The inspiration for the Backbeat Beatles came from musician Chris O'Neill, who was spurred on to form the band after his successful acting performance in the BAFTA Award-winning Beatle film BackBeat.

"George's death was very sad," said Chris who played George in the film but is Paul McCartney with the band.

"I left a message of condolence when I found out and said thanks for all your help.

"After his death I was being inundated with e-mails from throughout the world. The Beatles have changed my life".

The band includes Paul McDonough as John Lennon, Dave Reilly as Ringo Starr, and Gary Harmon as George Harrison.

Chris says that since George's death the band have finished their own album of original material in their second band, Water.

The album, Rainmaker, was released late last year on the internet along with the band's debut single, Warchild.

Chris used to play John Lennon in the Backbeat Beatles until ex-member Peter Dale, who played Paul, left in September, 2000.

"We didn't find another Paul so I played him," says Chris.

"I didn't mind changing and I just ended up being myself on stage.

"The lad who plays John joined last year."

Since forming in 1994, the Backbeat Beatles have been on television many times, including an appearance on The Big Breakfast, as well as touring Britain and Europe.

"We're amongst the top three of the best Beatle tribute bands, or so we've been told," says Chris.
