EVESHAM High School has launched a fund-raising campaign in a bid to become South Worcestershire's specialist Sports College.
If pupils and staff raise £50,000, there will be a big share-out of cash from the Government and other sports and lottery grants will be likely to follow.
The school's sport centre manager Steve Charlton said: "We need to raise the cash as a token gesture, then the DES will grant us £100,000 and £123 per pupil for four years.
"This is a great opportunity for the school. Our sports hall and outdoor facilities, including our Astro turf, are already very widely used throughout the year by pupils and outside clubs.
"If all goes well we will be forging even stronger links with first and middle schools and introducing minority sports such as gymnastics."
Funding is likely to go towards state-of-the-art PE equipment and a sports science suite with clubhouse extension. Coaching courses for teachers and community sports leaders will also be on offer as well as more opportunities for the disabled to develop health and fitness.
Headteacher David Kelly is sending out appeals to Vale companies for sponsorship and urging pupils and parents to take part in fund-raising before the deadline in October.
Former pupil and TV celebrity Alistair McGowan has promised to help out by compering an auction of promises evening planned for the summer term.
Sixth former Penny New said: "We have raised almost £10,000 so far and, with the support of Alistair McGowan, we know we'll reach our target."
