PEOPLE can feast their pampered 21st century eyes on "labour-saving" cleaning products and paraphernalia from the last 100 years at a new Stourport library exhibition this month.

"Spick and Span," on loan from the county museum at Hartlebury, is a history of domestic grime-busting since the end of the Victorian era.

"It's divided in to four sections, from 1900 to 1930, 1930 to 1950, 1950 to 1970 and 1970 to the present day," explained library supervisor Janis Hope. "My favourite exhibit is a vacuum cleaner from 1911. It looks like a road drill if you compare it to a modern Dyson.

"And it's a social history too because you can see how people used to live. Another exhibit is an old tin washing tub used to clean clothes."

Miss Hope said the exhibition should appeal to a wide age range. "Young people who've grown up with microwaves will be wide-eyed and there's plenty of stuff older people will recognise." She added: "There's nothing I particularly remember!"

The exhibition, which is in the main library, runs until January 25.
