PREPARATIONS are underway to deal with the transfer of housing stock away from direct Worcester City Council control.
Councillors have already applied to the Government for a place on the 2002/3 Stock Transfer programme.
Now, they are calculating the financial costs of the transfer process, which is likely to take a year.
If the bid is successful, which will be known in early March, consultants will have to be appointed to oversee the transfer.
Estimates about the cost of this process range from £1.5m to £2.5m. A neighbouring authority which has recently transferred stock incurred costs of £2.5m.
And staffing costs are also likely to set the authority back between £300,000 and £500,000 in a full year.
If the application to the Government is successful, then tenants will be consulted and then balloted to decide whether stock moves to an independent or council-sponsored landlord.
