VETERAN chess star John Holmberg saved the day for Redditch in their Birmingham Chess League Division Eight match against Kingstanding B.

Holmber, at 82 the oldest player in the league drew on 55 years' playing experience to preserve his side's unbeaten record.

With only Holmberg's game adjourned, Redditch had just 1.5 points from four with John a piece down and his position looking dire.

But the captain dug deep to salvage a draw for the table-toppers.

The game went to two adjourned sessions and lasted a total of 7.5 hours and 161 moves.

He had to visit Kingstanding for the second adjournment, but arranged it to coincide with his team's match against Kingstanding A which they also drew.

Brian Drummond drew on board one and Phil Church and David Richardson both drew on the next two boards.
