ELDERLY people in Bromsgrove are being urged to be on their guard following an incident where two bogus callers visited a town woman's home.

The men, who police say, "claimed to be working for the council service regarding the gas supply," walked into the elderly woman's house in Crossley Walk, Charford.

She asked for identification, which they did not produce, and only left when her daughter arrived.

It appears nothing was stolen during the incident, which happened last Tuesday, January 8, at around 5pm.

The first offender is described as white, mid 20's with dark hair.

He had pock-marked skin, spoke with an Irish accent, was wearing jeans and was carrying a toolbox.

The second man is described as white, about 50 years old with greasy black collar length hair.

He was wearing square-shaped metal, silver or gold coloured, framed glasses and a black sleeveless jacket.

A Bromsgrove police spokesman said: "We always advise people to check the callers' identity before they let anyone into their home.

"If they have a chain they should use it and if the homeowner is still in doubt then they should check with the service the caller claims to be representing.

"Genuine callers do not mind waiting.

"Many bogus callers can be very convincing and persuasive, even dressing the part.

"They tend to prey on the more vulnerable members of society, particularly the elderly, who are only trying to be helpful to others and then fall victim to this type of crime.

"Anyone who is approached by these callers should contact the police."

Anyone with information about this incident should call Redditch and Bromsgrove police on (01527) 584888.
