TOWNSPEOPLE are being urged to be on their guard after a bogus salesman took money for large quantities of cigarettes and alcohol and then did not produce the bought goods.
The conman has approached businesses in the area and has claimed to be selling cigarettes and alcohol for employees to buy.
Once the money was handed over he said he would then go and fetch the goods - but in fact he disappeared with the cash.
The man was described as being white, in his early 20's, about 5ft 10 inches tall, of slim build with short curly mousy brown to ginger hair.
A force spokesman said: "At this stage we are aware of only one person being offered a large amount of cigarettes and alcohol, but there may be more victims.
"If anyone has been approached by someone fitting this description we are asking that they contact PC Nadine Pearse on (01527) 584888."
People can alternatively ring Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
